Mull Memo
The article on Mull was interesting and well researched (“Scotland’s Wee Bit o’ Island Heaven,†May 5). In 1993, my husband and I spent a morning in Tobermory and then made a 60-mile four-hour trip to Fionnphort, across from the island of Iona. We stayed overnight and caught the early Sunday ferry to Iona to attend Mass in the Abbey of St. Columba. Dating from 625 AD, it is one of the oldest seats of Christianity in Britain. Also, buried on the island are 48 kings, including Macbeth. The scenery on the only road around Mull is so spectacular as to be indescribable. The trip takes as long as it does because the road is one lane with turnouts; but this only slows you down, presenting no dangers, as ever-present sheep are afraid of cars. Those two days on Mull and Iona are highlights of my traveling life.
