Crash Kills Driver and Injures Passenger
A 23-year-old man died after his sports car veered off Laguna Canyon Road and rammed into a tree, California Highway Patrol officials said Wednesday.
Joe Parker Squyres of Rancho Santa Margarita was driving with a 33-year-old passenger just south of the Irvine city limit about 11 p.m. Tuesday when, for an unknown reason, he lost control of his car and skidded across the road, CHP spokeswoman Carol Kelly said. The car struck a sign and crashed into a tree.
Squyres was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he died. The passenger, Brandon Montgomery of San Clemente, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday.
Both men were wearing their seat belts. Traffic investigators have not determined the speed at which their vehicle was traveling. Squyres’ driving record indicated that he was cited earlier this year for tailgating another vehicle and was involved in a traffic accident in 1994.
