A California Highway Patrol officer and a motorist he was testing for driving under the influence of alcohol tumbled over the edge of a downtown freeway during a struggle Sunday night, severely injuring both men, officials said.
The unidentified officer and the suspect, who had been pulled over after allegedly causing an accident on the southbound Golden State Freeway, fell about 40 feet onto South Boyle Avenue.
The officer was listed in serious condition, said CHP spokesman Garry Goldenberg. The driver, to whom the officer was administering a field sobriety test, was in critical condition, Goldenberg said.
Goldenberg declined to identify either man.
