World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Leniency Offered to Rope In Criminals
Police in Beijing have given suspected murderers, rapists, hoodlums and robbers until the end of June to surrender in a crime crackdown, offering to ignore lesser crimes in sentencing and to waive the death penalty. The notice from judicial and public security authorities in the capital said the call to criminals was part of the new war on crime launched last week throughout China. The notice called on wanted criminals to surrender to their local police stations before June 30. “Those who surrender within that period and openly confess to their crimes will be treated leniently,†the notice said.
