A fire that started in a bedroom entertainment center Friday gutted a second-story apartment and caused an estimated $40,000 in damage, authorities said.
Maintenance workers saw smoke coming from an upstairs apartment in the 800 block of Fairview Street about 11 a.m. and tried to contain the blaze using portable extinguishers while firefighters were summoned, Santa Ana Fire Capt. Robert Soria said.
The fire, which was controlled by 17 firefighters in about 10 minutes, caused no injuries, Soria said.
Investigators said the cause of the fire apparently was an electrical malfunction in an area where residents stored their television, videocassette recorder and stereo.
The three residents of the one-bedroom unit were moved to another unit in the same complex, firefighters said.
