Woodbridge Beats Irvine in Softball

Christy Robitaille gave up four hits, Ashley Boone homered and Lolita Harper drove in two runs as fourth-ranked Woodbridge beat sixth-ranked Irvine, 4-0, in a Sea View League softball game Wednesday at Alton Park.
It was the first of three consecutive games involving the league’s three ranked teams. Irvine (16-4-1, 2-1 in league) plays No. 10 El Toro (14-9, 3-0) on Friday, and Woodbridge (17-5, 3-0) plays El Toro next Wednesday.
“We didn’t expect [Irvine] to have the record they had,” Woodbridge Coach Alan Dugard said. “We were very wary because they kept winning ball games. If they can beat West Covina, they can beat anybody.”
Irvine beat West Covina (ranked third in Southern Section Division II) and Kennedy (seventh in Orange County) last weekend, both by 5-1 scores.
Woodbridge took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Irvine pitcher Colleen Young (12-2) walked Jackie Sukiasian. Corey Washington pushed a bunt past the defense for a single, and an out later, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Sukiasian scored on Natasha Watley’s grounder to shortstop as Edel Leyden’s throw bounced in the dirt. Harper lined a two-out, two-run single to center field.
Boone homered in the fifth inning, her first.
Robitaille improved to 13-4.
