World IN BRIEF : ITALY : Ex-Premier on Trial in Editor’s Slaying

Former Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, already being tried for his alleged links to the Mafia, went on trial for allegedly turning to the mob to murder a troublesome journalist in 1979. The seven-time former head of government is charged with complicity in the killing of Mino Pecorelli, an editor of a political scandal sheet who was believed to have obtained compromising information about the politician. Andreotti has denied any part in the Pecorelli killing or any association with the Mafia.
