Kotsay, Jones Lead Titans to 12-7 Victory Over Loyola Marymount
Cal State Fullerton scored five runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 12-7 victory over Loyola Marymount in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Loyola.
Mark Kotsay had three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored and Jack Jones had three hits and four runs scored for the Titans (33-4), who had 15 hits and nine walks.
Brian Loyd, Steve Chatham, C.J. Ankrum and Tony Martinez each had two RBIs and Jeremy Giambi had two runs scored, an RBI and four walks for Fullerton.
The Titans led, 10-3, after 5 1/2 innings, but Loyola Marymount (12-29) scored four in the last four innings. Fullerton used four pitchers--Todd Singelyn (1-0), Mike Greenlee, Luis Estrella and Mark Chavez--and each gave up a home run.
In nonconference baseball:
Azusa Pacific 14, Chapman 6--Greg Folsom homered for Azusa Pacific (22-8), ranked 25th in the NAIA. Don Disbro hit two home runs for Chapman (16-12).
The Master’s 10, Southern California College 6--Kevin Doyle had two hits and two runs scored for SCC (10-26).
In Big West Conference softball:
Long Beach State 5-5, Nevada Las Vegas 2-4 (2nd game, 11 innings)--The 49ers handed UNLV its first doubleheader sweep at home since 1991, when Cal State Fullerton beat the Rebels twice.
Tiffany Blood reached base safely in all nine plate appearances, going three for three in the first game with three RBIs and two for two in the second game with four walks.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Cal State Fullerton 7, Cal State Northridge 2--Jennifer Canfield won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and teamed with Susie Baker to win at No. 2 doubles, 9-8, for the visiting Titans (8-12), who swept in doubles.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:
USC 3, UC Irvine 0--Gabe Gardner had 24 kills, Chris Guigliano had 20, Eric Seiffert 11, and Szilard Kovacs had six blocks for 14th-ranked USC (9-12, 8-10), which won, 15-8, 15-6, 15-11.
Donnie Rafter had 18 kills for Irvine (7-16, 2-15).
