MONSTERS OF THE SEA by Richard Ellis (Doubleday/Main Street: $12.95; 429 pp.). Ellis offers an entertaining overview of the mythology and natural history of “sea monsters.†The most interesting chapters explore how “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea†and other novels and films have created an undeservedly negative popular image of squid and octopus. Although fantastic stories circulate about giant squid pulling down sailing ships, very little is known about these fascinating creatures. Scientists have never examined a healthy giant squid--only dying specimens or bodies that have washed ashore or been found in the stomachs of whales. Ellis also presents a lively account of the trade in “Jenny Hanivers†(ersatz mermaids made from dried fish), the Loch Ness monster and other aquatic curiosities, both real and imaginary.
