Attorney David W. Fleming has been elected chairman of the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley, a consortium of volunteers and business groups.

Formed after the Northridge earthquake to spur economic growth and job creation, the alliance has focused on attracting new businesses to the Valley and retaining existing ones. It is trying to raise $17.8 million to be used for, among other things, job training and placement and to induce businesses to locate in the Valley.

Fleming, an attorney with the Latham & Watkins law firm who also serves as president of the Los Angeles City Fire Commission, said he wants to focus on helping the alliance’s various task forces accomplish their goals. His term will run one year.

The alliance, which has a 90-member board of directors, is a collaboration of the United Chambers of Commerce, the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn., the Valley Economic Development Center and the California Industrial Leadership Council.

Fleming succeeds Benjamin Reznik and David Honda, who have been co-chairmen of the organization since it was founded.

Fleming, who practices corporate law, is a 40-year resident of the Valley. He lives in Studio City with his wife, Jean. The couple have three grown sons.
