World IN BRIEF : VATICAN CITY : Ill Pope Makes First Showing in a Week

Pope John Paul II, looking tired and drawn from a recent fever, appeared in public for the first time in a week. The 75-year-old pontiff walked unaided up the central aisle of St. Peter’s Basilica and participated in the first 40 minutes of a beatification ceremony before retiring for more rest. The Vatican has said John Paul was on a lighter diet because of a recent fever, said to be caused by an intestinal problem.
