San Gabriel Valley : Pool Hall Can Go Guardless in Daytime
- Share via
The El Monte City Council gave a pool hall permission Tuesday to operate without security guards during its daytime hours for four days a week.
The International Club on Telstar Avenue was shut down for three months, beginning in November, after two killings and several parking lot shootings, Assistant Police Chief Bill Ankeny said.
Club co-owner Jon Bui disputed the reports of shootings at or near his property but agreed to install outdoor security cameras and a fence around the parking lot before reopening the 3-year old business in January.
The new concessions to curb violence and crime will allow the club to operate without security guards from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, City Atty. Dave Gondek said.
Police told the city that the pool hall still must have three security guards on evenings and weekends, when it attracts gang activity, Ankeny said.
