Michael Granville of Bell Gardens set a meet record with a time of 57.3 seconds in the 500-yard dash at the L.A. Invitational at the Sports Arena Saturday. . . . Also at the meet, William Moore of Paramount won his heat in the 50-meter hurdles in 7.09. Long Beach Poly’s Ty Anderson won the triple jump with a mark of 49 feet 2 inches. . . . Free throws got the best and worst of the Peninsula boys’ and girls’ basketball teams in the past week. Two free throws by Eden Palacio with 18 seconds to play lifted the girls’ team to a 41-40 victory over Millikan in a Southern Section I-AA quarterfinal game Saturday. But the boys’ team suffered a 53-52 loss to Victor Valley in a I-AA semifinal Tuesday when Trevor Beal made two free throws with 35 seconds remaining. The Panthers advanced to the semifinals after upsetting second-seeded Esperanza, 56-42, Friday behind 20 points from Jim Brewer. . . . Kiyoko Miller, who played at Brea Olinda last season, scored 19 points and had eight rebounds to lead Cerritos Valley Christian over Mojave, 69-51, in a Southern Section IV-A semifinal Saturday. . . . The San Pedro girls’ soccer team will play Chatsworth in the City Section 4-A title game at East L.A. College Saturday at noon.
