World IN BRIEF : ITALY : Venice Mayor, Others Face Probe in Fire

An Italian magistrate told the mayor of Venice and at least seven other people they are under investigation in connection with a fire that wrecked Venice’s famed La Fenice opera house last month, judicial sources said. Investigating Magistrate Felice Casson issued judicial notices advising the eight people that they are under investigation and should seek legal assistance. He ordered them to appear at his office today. They are suspected of being indirectly responsible for conditions that allowed the blaze to start, Italian media reports said. Mayor Massimo Cacciari is president of the city-owned theater.
