U.S. Sweeps Mexico in Davis Cup

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The United States swept Mexico on Sunday in the first round of the Davis Cup but faces a tougher test against the Czech Republic in April.
Michael Chang, who started the sweep by beating Leonardo Lavalle on Friday, downed Alejandro Hernandez, 6-0, 6-2, on Sunday. Todd Martin, who beat Hernandez on Friday, edged Lavalle, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, on Sunday as the Mexicans won their only set of the five tennis matches.
The United States clinched the first-round victory a day earlier in doubles, essentially turning Sunday’s singles into exhibitions.
While the United States was shutting out Mexico, the Czechs were sweeping their first-round matches against Hungary.
India also advanced by upsetting the Netherlands when Jan Siemerink lost his second singles match and Jacco Eltingh conceded his because of injury.
