Three-Run Blast Sinks Pepperdine
Mark Cridland’s three-run pinch-hit home run off reliever Jeff Gibbons in the sixth inning lifted Texas to a 4-2 nonconference baseball victory over Pepperdine (3-4) on Saturday at Austin.
Texas (3-4), ranked 12th in the nation, trailed, 2-1, before beginning the sixth with two singles. After a fly out, Gibbons replaced starter Greg Gregory (1-1) and Cridland replaced Roman Escamilla. Cridland blasted Gibbons’ third pitch over the right-field fence.
Pierce 8, Cerritos 1; Pierce 15, L.A. City 6--Keith Reed (1-0) scattered four hits over eight innings, and Carlos Nunez hit a home run, double and single for the Brahmas (4-2) against Cerritos in the Western State Conference tournament at Pierce. The Brahmas finished the tournament 4-0.
Mike Glendenning had two hits and Josh Goldberg (1-0) allowed three hits over six innings for the Brahmas against L.A. City.
Canyons 12, East Los Angeles 9; Harbor 6, Canyons 4--Louis Sanchez hit a grand slam and Rick Nadeau added a two-run double as the Cougars (2-4) rallied for six runs in the eighth inning to win a WSC tournament game.
Moorpark 4, Cerritos 3; L.A. City 5, Moorpark 2--Moorpark’s Scott Gentleman had two hits and three runs batted in against Cerritos in the WSC tournament.
Oxnard 10, Santa Rosa 2; Oxnard 8, Cerro Coso 0--Ray Clinton pitched eight innings for Oxnard (4-0) against Santa Rosa in the Porterville tournament, striking out nine and allowing three hits and no walks. Josh Towers pitched seven shutout innings, striking out six, against Cerro Coso.
Glendale 2, Imperial Valley 1; Victorville 10, Glendale 2--Gary Lee fired a three-hitter and struck out 14 for the Vaqueros (3-4-1) against Imperial Valley in the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 69, Whittier 63--The Kingsmen (16-5, 8-2) shot 37.9% from the field, but Mark Heerema had 22 points and four steals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whittier.
Ventura 83, Santa Barbara 56--Hakeem Ward scored 20 points and Damien Cantrell added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates (26-2, 8-0) in a WSC North Division game.
Moorpark 71, Hancock 57--Wendell Nunnery scored 19 points, Brady Mertes had 18 points and 16 rebounds and Tim Nunnery added 13 points and 10 assists for the Raiders (15-14, 6-2) in a WSC North Division game at Hancock.
Antelope Valley 109, Desert 98--Jerome Payton had 25 points and Brandon McIntire had 24 for the Marauders (22-5, 6-0) in the Foothill Conference victory.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal State Sacramento 69, Cal State Northridge 58--Carrie Dormire scored 12 points and Sherry Ramirez added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Matadors (5-17, 1-2) in an American West Conference game at Northridge.
Ventura 85, Santa Barbara 40--April Garrish scored 14 points and was one of six players for the Pirates (28-0, 14-0) to score in double figures in a WSC game.
Canyons 69, Santa Monica 50--Melissa Dunkerly scored 18 points for the Cougars (18-11, 6-2) in a WSC South Division game.
