Pepperdine Routed at Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. — Rick Brainard scored 24 points and Kweemada King 20 to lead Portland past Pepperdine, 89-72, Saturday in a West Coast Conference game.
Chivo Anderson added 12 points and Greg Klosterman 11 for Portland (15-7, 6-4).
Pepperdine’s Gerald Brown, the conference’s leading scorer with an 18.5 average, scored 29 points, 18 in the second half. Bryan Hill added 15 and Tezale Archie 10 for the Waves (9-13, 2-8).
The Pilots trailed, 42-41, at halftime but went on a 13-6 run to open the second half.
Then Pepperdine went on a 10-0 run, with Brown scoring six, to take a 58-54 lead with 12:44 left.
King scored the next five points to close the gap to 58-57 and Portland went on a 9-0 run to take control of the game.
The Pilots made nine of 10 free throws in the final 41 seconds.
