The CIF State Federated Council approved a plan Friday to rotate the state basketball tournament and the track and field championships between Northern and Southern California in 1997.

The Pond will host the basketball tournament in ’97 and the track finals will be at a site to be determined in the north. Hughes Stadium in Sacramento was mentioned as a possible site.

The council, meeting in San Francisco, didn’t determine how frequently the events would be rotated or how many sports might eventually be affected. It’s believed the council will later vote on a rotation period of two years.

The basketball tournament, which traditionally has been held at the Oakland Coliseum Arena, will be at Arco Arena in Sacramento next month. The track finals will be at Cerritos College in June.
