Terence Reese; World-Class Bridge Player and Author of 83 Books
Terence Reese, 82, world-class bridge player and author of 83 books on bridge. A bridge correspondent for the London Observer, Reese hosted a BBC radio program, “Bridge on the Air,†for 12 years. Among his books were the classics “Reese on Bridge†in 1948 and “The Expert Game†in 1958. He and his partner, Boris Schapiro, played with the British teams that won European championships in 1948, 1949, 1954 and 1963. In 1955, they won the Bermuda Bowl Championship, the world’s top event, in New York. Ten years later, the two men were accused of using illegal finger signals in their Bermuda Bowl bidding in Buenos Aires. They insisted that they were innocent and were absolved after a controversial inquiry by the British Bridge League. Reese won the Gold Cup, Britain’s senior challenge, eight times and the Master Pairs seven times. On Wednesday in Hove, England.
