McDonald’s Opens First Restaurant in Croatia: The fast-food chain plans to open three more in Zagreb soon, state media reported. HINA news agency said McDonald’s Corp. had invested $1.2 million in the burger restaurant, which opened in Zagreb on Thursday. McDonald’s opened its first restaurant in former Yugoslavia in Belgrade, the Serbian capital, during the 1980s, before the violent breakup of the Balkan federation. At one point during the Balkan fighting, homesick U.N. Canadian troops based in Croatia made trips across front lines to Belgrade to load up on Big Macs.
