Police Department Offers Computerized Bulletin Board

The Police Department has gone high-tech to help residents stay aware of crime and send tips on cases.

Residents with a computer and modem can access the Foot Beat computer bulletin board to offer anonymous tips on crimes and receive information about crime trends, safety precautions and Neighborhood Watch groups.

Also offered are disaster preparedness tips and recruiting updates for the department’s senior volunteer force and Police Explorers youth group.

The Foot Beat went online earlier this month, logging 300 calls so far.

“We’re very pleased with the response,†said Lt. Mike Hanrahan, who set up the bulletin board.

Said Police Chief Elvin G. Miali: “We’re walking into the 21st century.â€

Hanrahan said the bulletin board goes hand in hand with the department’s philosophy of community-based policing, working with residents to reduce crime and solve problems in their neighborhoods.

“This is the most practical way we can institute a foot beat out in the community, but we’re doing it electronically,†he said.
