Stackhouse Can’t Stop Jordan, and Bulls Win

Michael Jordan showed up Jerry Stackhouse by scoring a season-high 48 points as the Chicago Bulls had an easy time with the Philadelphia 76ers, beating them, 120-93, Saturday night at Philadelphia.

Anyone who compared Jordan to fellow North Carolina product Stackhouse didn’t do Stackhouse any favors. The 76ers’ rookie was taken to school by Jordan, who tied his old season-best of 45 points when he made a jump shot with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

Stackhouse attempted to defend Jordan for most of the night and had no real success, getting duped by pump fakes or leaving Jordan with plenty of room to shoot. Jordan was 18 of 28 from the floor, including five of seven three-point attempts. He made all seven of his free throws and had 10 rebounds.

At the other end, Stackhouse was continually frustrated by Jordan’s defense and scored only 13 points on four of 11 shooting.

The Bulls, whose 10 turnovers were half as many as the 76ers committed, also got 20 points and 10 assists from Scottie Pippen and 16 rebounds from Dennis Rodman.

Vancouver 69, Miami 65--The Grizzlies defeated the Heat in Vancouver in the third-lowest scoring NBA game since the inception of the 24-second clock.

The combined total of 134 points was one more than New York and Detroit scored in 1992 and 15 more than the Milwaukee Hawks and Boston Celtics had in 1955.

Both teams shot only 32% from the floor and Miami scored only 24 points in the second half, tying the NBA low.

Toronto 106, Washington 100--Rookie point guard Damon Stoudamire had 29 points and 11 assists as the Raptors ended a five-game losing streak by beating the Bullets at home.

Stoudamire had 19 points in the first half and seven assists in the second as Toronto won for the first time since Dec. 26.

Indiana 103, Minnesota 94--Reggie Miller’s 26 points led the Pacers to their 10th consecutive home victory. The Timberwolves erased a 31-point Pacer lead, pulling to within 98-94 before Indiana clinched the victory with five free throws.

Sacramento 119, New York 111--Mitch Richmond scored 17 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter as the Kings ended a six-game road losing streak.

The win also broke a 13-game losing streak at Madison Square Garden for the Kings, whose last victory in New York came Nov. 17, 1981, when the franchise was located in Kansas City.

Detroit 91, New Jersey 80--Grant Hill had 26 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists and teammate Allan Houston scored 24 to lift the Pistons to victory in East Rutherford, N.J. It was Hill’s fourth triple-double of the season and his second against the Nets.

San Antonio 106, Orlando 105--Vinny Del Negro scored 30 points and David Robinson had 27 as the Spurs beat the Magic in San Antonio.

Orlando’s Penny Hardaway led all scorers with 35, but had a shot blocked by Doc Rivers at the buzzer to preserve the victory for the Spurs (24-9).

Charlotte 103, Dallas 83--Larry Johnson scored 20 points in his annual Dallas homecoming and the Hornets held the Mavericks 57 points below their point total of the previous night when they scored 140 against Phoenix.

Johnson, a native of Dallas, went seven for 14 from the field and had seven rebounds.

Atlanta 108, Boston 105--Grant Long broke a tie with two minutes remaining, then made two free throws with 4.4 seconds left to give the Hawks a victory at home.

Portland 118, Denver 117--Rod Strickland had 26 points and 16 assists as the Trail Blazers won their third in a row, beating the Nuggets in Denver. Arvydas Sabonis had 22 points and Clifford Robinson 21 for Portland, which ended Denver’s three-game winning streak.

The Utah Jazz extended the contract of eight-time NBA all-star forward Karl Malone. The terms and length of the extension were not disclosed.
