Obituaries : Robert W. Scott; Retired Naval Officer
Robert Warren Scott, a Port Hueneme resident and retired naval officer who fought in World War II, died Wednesday at the age of 75.
Scott was born June 18, 1920, in Grand Junction, Colo. He joined the Navy at age 18, and soon found himself serving on destroyers in some of the war’s most heated battles, including the Midway Islands and Guadalcanal.
He met his future wife, Jean, in December 1943 when his ship docked in San Francisco for repairs. Jean was working in a five-and-dime store and was engaged to marry another man in January.
Soon after they met, she changed her mind about the wedding.
“He had such an intellect, and he was just so interesting,†she said. “There was a chemistry there.â€
The couple married in 1946.
After the war, Scott remained in the Navy, witnessing some of the nuclear bomb tests in the Pacific. In 1963, he came to Port Hueneme and became the first department head of Terrier, Tartar and Talos Surface to Air Missile Weapons Systems at the naval base. He later served as the chief financial planning officer before his retirement from the Navy in 1970.
He then worked as the general manager of an engineering firm in Oxnard, retiring in 1975.
Other survivors include his son, Robert, of Port Hueneme; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Bob Ford of Palos Verdes, and three grandsons.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday at the CBC Naval Chapel in Port Hueneme. Memorial donations, instead of flowers, may be made to the American Heart Assn.
