BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CSUN Women Look Twice as Good

Carrie Dormire had 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots Saturday as Cal State Northridge defeated visiting Eastern Washington, 58-54, in a nonconference women’s game.

The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Matadors (2-9) and doubled their victory total from last season when they finished 1-26.

Sherry Ramirez (six of seven from the field) and Maureen Batiste added 12 and 10 points for Northridge.

Kristy Missall had 11 points for Eastern Washington (2-8).

Valley 65, Lane (Ore.) 64--The Monarchs were scoreless for the final four minutes and almost blew an 11-point lead in the fifth-place game of the Fullerton tournament.

Shawanda Hotchkiss, a 5-foot-6 guard from Channel Islands High, had 23 points for Valley (12-7), and Valery Brady added 22, 18 in the first half.

Jenille Ramos had seven points and 10 assists for the Monarchs.

The Master’s 84, Cal State Chico 79--Mike Penberthy scored a career-high 42 points to carry the Mustangs to victory in the championship game of the Cal State Chico tournament.

Penberthy, a 6-foot-2 junior guard from Fresno Hoover High, hit 15 of 26 shots from the field--and was seven of 15 from three-point range--as the Mustangs (10-3) won their fifth consecutive game.

James Mosley had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Master’s and Leo Gorauskas added 10 points.

Bryant Tyler had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats (7-4).

Cal Lutheran 82, Concordia (IL.) 63--Mark Heerema, who made the all-tournament team, had 17 points, and Dave Ulloa, who was named most valuable player, added 10 points and three assists for the Kingsmen (8-2) in the Lutheran Brotherhood Classic final round.

Nick Athanassakis had seven rebounds and 10 points for the Kingsmen, who have won eight of their last nine games.

GIRLS

Buena 57, Archbishop Mitty 43--Nicole Grayhouse scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs (8-0) in the championship game of the Archbishop Mitty tournament. Grayhouse was named all-tournament along with guard Ebony Conley and Christie Erickson.

Conley had nine points while Erickson had eight in the victory over the 11th-ranked team in the country.

Sequoyah (Ga.) 70, Alemany 48--Kelli Kobayashi scored 21 points for the Indians (8-6) and set tournament records for three-point baskets in a game (six) and for the whole event (13) in the fifth-place game of the Pickerington (Ohio) tournament.

Kobayashi and teammate Carly Funicello, who scored eight points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, were named to the all-tournament team.

Sequoyah (6-1) is ranked 12th in the USA Today national girls’ poll.

North Hollywood 64, Pasadena 56--Lindsay Sotero-Higa scored 20 points and Samantha Fargeon added 17 points and was named most valuable player as the Huskies (8-3) won the title at the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Tashean Thomas, who had eight points for North Hollywood, was also named to the all-tournament team.

Bell-Jeff 50, St. Mary’s Academy 35--The Guards (12-2) outscored St. Mary’s, 25-14, in the second half of the third-place game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Linda Samayoa had 14 points and four steals, Felicia Flores had 10 points and three steals, and Veronica Cobb added 10 points and 14 rebounds for Bell-Jeff.

Burroughs 56, Fillmore 51--Joyce Lau had 15 points and Janelle Simon added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Indians (8-6) in the fifth-place game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

April Kozar scored 19 points for Fillmore (12-3).

Canyon 56, Venice 52--Tanya McLaughlin, a 5-10 center who was named to the all-tournament team, had 30 points and 21 rebounds for Canyon (6-10) in the ninth-place game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Valerie Wiggins added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Cowboys.

All-tournament selection Renee Rodriguez had 15 points for Venice.

Moorpark 58, Louisville 50--Tracey Milburn had 23 points, six rebounds and five assists for Moorpark (10-0) in a nonleague victory at home. Kelly Jaeger added 14 points for the Musketeers.

Roxy Romo scored 14 for Louisville (7-4) and Rosie Chingcuangco added 11 points and six steals.

BOYS

Simi Valley 57, Chaminade 42--Pero Vasiljevic scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds for the host Pioneers (9-3) in a nonleague game.

Rod MacLean added 16 for the Pioneers, who outscored the Eagles, 22-11, in the fourth quarter. Antonio Lang scored 12 for Chaminade (5-8).

Hoover 70, Sweetwater 53--Andy Russell and Mark Hull each scored 15 points, and Fernando Ramirez added 13 for the Tornadoes (7-5) in the third-place game of the Estancia tournament.
