I’m a bird-watcher--Oak Canyon Nature Center will present two birding excursions Saturday, at 8 and 10 a.m.

The 8 a.m. program is designed for serious, experienced bird-watchers who want to explore the wetlands portion of Oak Canyon.

A naturalist will lead the hike and be available to assist in the identification of different species. Birders can expect to see a variety of land and water fowl, including wood ducks, red-tailed hawks and migrating species.

The 10 a.m. hike is designed for beginning birders. The focus will be on birding basics, such as song identification and spotting tips. A naturalist will lead the hike and identify species. The hike is open to all ages, although younger children may become tired or restless during the hourlong walk.

Birders will want to bring binoculars, birding books and a journal to record sightings. The hike is easy, but participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. Early mornings in the canyon can be chilly.

Oak Canyon Nature Center is a 58-acre natural park in Anaheim Hills. Six miles of hiking trails, a stream and three canyons surround the park’s fully staffed interpretive center. Park hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Picnicking, bicycles, smoking, dogs and collecting are not permitted at the park.

Whereabouts: The center is at 6700 Walnut Canyon Road in Anaheim. To get to there, take the Riverside Freeway east to the Imperial Highway offramp. Exit and head south to Nohl Ranch Road; turn left again. Pass the Anaheim Hills Golf Course; the nature center is at the end of the road. Parking is on the left.
