Fruit Makes a Name for Itself

Orange County got its name after a long struggle.

In the 1880s, residents were united in their desire to break away from Los Angeles County. Anaheim residents liked the name Anaheim County, while Santa Ana residents wanted Santa Ana or Santana County.

In 1889, Orange County was selected as a compromise, a nod to the fruit that was a major cash crop.
