HUNTINGTON BEACH : Plan OKd for Eatery at Beach

In a boost for the city’s revenue projections, plans for a new beachfront restaurant at the Huntington Beach Pier won approval Friday from the California Coastal Commission.

“It’s one of the more important downtown projects the city has,” said Planning Director Howard Zelefsky, who was in San Francisco for the Coastal Commission meeting. “It provides another reason to come to the beach--for fine dining.”

The Coastal Commission approved the city’s proposal for an 18,000-square-foot, two-story restaurant at the site of the former Maxwell’s by the Sea. The aged restaurant building, which was condemned and closed by the city in January because of storm and other damage, will be demolished.

TS Restaurants, which operates waterfront eateries in California and elsewhere, has agreed to spend $5 million to build and furnish the new restaurant, which will be called Duke’s and will have a surfing theme.

Construction is expected to begin in September, Community Services Director Ron Hagan said.

The restaurant is expected to open in July 1997, Hagan said, and is projected to generate annual tax revenue of at least $200,000 for the city.
