From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Voters elected Jesse Jackson Jr. to a House seat, sending to Congress the namesake and son of the civil rights activist who twice sought his party’s presidential nomination. Returns from the 2nd Congressional District showed the 30-year-old Democrat winning as expected by a 3-1 margin over Republican Thomas Somer in the heavily Democratic district which runs from Chicago’s South Side into neighboring suburbs. Jackson was guaranteed election two weeks ago when he beat four rivals, with 48% of the vote.
