NHL ROUNDUP : Islanders Lose to Fighting Devils
The New York Islanders lost everything on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils.
They lost yet another game, a rare goaltender fight between Tommy Soderstrom and the Devils’ Corey Schwab, and worst of all, they lost defenseman Darius Kasparaitis to major hand injury in New Jersey’s 4-2 victory at East Rutherford, N.J.
John MacLean scored twice off great setups by Neal Broten and linemate Brian Rolston added three assists in the game highlighted by a second-period brawl that pitted Schwab and Soderstrom. The fight led to three ejections and the Kasparaitis injury.
Schwab said he went after Soderstrom after the Islanders’ goalie put his hand around his teammate Bill Guerin’s head to restrain him. Guerin had started the fisticuffs after taking exception to a check by defenseman Rich Pilon.
Colorado 7, Ottawa 3--Peter Forsberg had two goals and three assists and goaltender Stephane Fiset had 19 saves to win his 14th game of the season for the Avalanche at Ottawa.
Florida 3, Boston 1--Jody Hull scored the game-winner and John Vanbiesbrouck made several sterling saves after a three-game absence to lead the Panthers at Miami.
N.Y. Rangers 2, Montreal 2--Valeri Bure scored two goals in the third period to give the Canadiens a tie at Montreal.
Pittsburgh 6, Hartford 0--Jaromir Jagr had a goal and three assists and Ken Wregget recorded his third shutout in 12 games as the Penguins beat the Whalers at Pittsburgh and extended their winning streak to eight games.
Toronto 3, Dallas 1--Mats Sundin scored two goals as the Maple Leafs improved their record against the Stars at Toronto to 8-0-1 since Jan. 26, 1993.
Edmonton 4, San Jose 2--Doug Weight broke a tie with his ninth goal of the season and added an empty-net goal as the Oilers defeated the Sharks at San Jose.
Vancouver 4, Calgary 3--Mike Ridley, Trevor Linden, Scott Walker and Roman Oksiuta each scored goals to lead the Canucks at Calgary.
