Marcos Widow Seeks to Stop Asset Transfer

MANILA — Imelda Marcos has asked an appeals court in Los Angeles to stop a federal judge from ordering the transfer of millions of dollars from her late husband’s Swiss bank accounts to victims of abuses under his government, she said Saturday.
A federal court jury in Honolulu awarded the victims $1.9 billion in damages after they won a class-action suit against former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
U.S. District Judge Manuel L. Real ruled in May that the victims could collect the estimated $475 million in Marcos’ Swiss accounts.
On Friday, Real said he planned to issue an order soon to two Swiss banks to transfer the accounts to a fund for the 9,400 victims.
Marcos’ widow said Saturday that she was shocked by that announcement.
“We are surprised because this Swiss case is now well in progress in the court of appeals,” she said in a telephone interview.
