Northridge Can’t Overcome Fouls in Loss to BYU
PROVO, Utah — Cal State Northridge stayed with Brigham Young for nearly a half, but too many fouls and bad defense caught up to the Matadors and they lost, 99-74, on Friday night in front of 14,938 at the Marriott Center in the Brigham Young tournament.
The Matadors were called time after time for reaching fouls and, as a result, the Cougars (3-2) won the game at the free throw line. BYU hit 34 of 44 from the line, while Northridge made just 12 of 19. The Matadors committed 32 fouls, the Cougars 18.
Northridge (1-4) will play Stephen F. Austin (3-2) in the tournament consolation game at 4:30 p.m. PST today. The Lumberjacks lost, 68-58, to Louisiana Tech.
Against BYU, Northridge shot well from the floor in the first half--54.8% and 40% from three-point range--and had several small leads before BYU took a five-point halftime lead and pushed it to double digits early in the second half.
Kenneth Roberts had 24 points for BYU.
