NHL ROUNDUP : Streaking Rangers Get Right Breaks Yet Again
The New York Rangers had to go into overtime to preserve their home-ice unbeaten streak. And they needed two penalties to do it.
The Rangers were already on a power play when, with 30.4 seconds left in regulation, they received a second man advantage when Detroit’s Greg Johnson was called for using an illegal stick.
They quickly took advantage of the five-on-three situation, as Pat Verbeek scored 27 seconds into the extra period for a 2-1 victory that extended the Rangers’ home streak to 12 (10-0-2) and ended the Red Wings’ winning streak at six.
The Rangers also moved into a three-way tie for first in the Atlantic Division with Florida and Philadelphia.
Tampa Bay 3, Boston 1--Rookie Aaron Gavey broke a tie by scoring his second goal of the season in the third period as the Lightning won at St. Petersburg, Fla.
St. Louis 6, Vancouver 3--Brett Hull scored two goals and Jeff Norton had two assists at Vancouver as the Blues ran their unbeaten streak to five games. St. Louis goalie Grant Fuhr made 21 saves.
Buffalo 2, Washington 2--Yuri Khmylev’s goal with 2:44 left lifted the Sabres to a tie with the Capitals at Buffalo, N.Y.
