HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Ritter Paces Notre Dame Girls

For the third consecutive season, Notre Dame and Village Christian met in the final of the L.A. Baptist girls’ basketball tournament.

And for the second year in a row, Notre Dame (4-0) went home a winner, taking a 61-44 decision Saturday at L.A. Baptist High.

Ashley Ritter scored 16 points and added six rebounds, four assists and five steals as the Knights pulled away at the end of the first half. Lourdes Slinsky added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Lindy James scored 20 for the Crusaders (2-2).

Ritter was named tournament MVP.

La Reina 49, St. Genevieve 17--The Regents (2-1) used a full-court press to steal the ball 16 times and turned the ball over only 10 times in the consolation championship of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Kindrea Cuccia scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds for La Reina. Adelita Pallares scored eight for the Valiants (1-2).

La Reina has allowed a combined 36 points in the past two games.

Crescenta Valley 71, Simi Valley 66--Sophomore Michelle Greco was unstoppable for the host Falcons (4-0) in the championship of the Crescenta Valley tournament. She scored 38 points, had 19 rebounds, six assists, four steals and four blocked shots.

Tawnee Cooper scored 27 points for Simi Valley (3-1).

The Pioneers had a 14-point lead in the second quarter, but the Falcons closed the gap, capped by Sally Bagdhassarian’s three-point basket at the buzzer to cut the difference to 38-30.

Simi Valley jumped back to a 10-point lead in the third quarter before a 12-2 Crescenta Valley run tied the score with two minutes left in the period.

Crescenta Valley was 24 of 31 from the free-throw line.

Littlerock 58, Canyon 57--Kristine Phillips scored 23 points for the Lobos in the third-place game of the Crescenta Valley tournament. Canyon is 1-4.

Bishop Amat 71, Royal 42--Amber Shores scored 10 points for Royal (2-2) in the Crescenta Valley tournament third-place game.

Glendale 51, South Pasadena 46--Alenoush Khachikian had 18 points for Glendale (3-2) in the Crescenta Valley tournament fifth-place game.

Littlerock 58, Canyon 57--Kristin Phillips had 23 points for the Lobos (1-4) while Linsay Kauffman scored 17 for the Cowboys (1-4) in the Crescenta Valley tournament seventh-place game.

Bell-Jeff 64, Paraclete 41--Jaclyn Johnson had 27 points and 11 rebounds and Cheryl Flores eight points, eight steals and six assists as the Guards (3-0) defeated Paraclete (2-1) in the championship game of the High Desert tournament in Lancaster. Flores was named the tournament’s MVP.

Louisville 49, Saugus 31--Becky Witt had 19 points, eight assists and five steals as the Royals (2-1) defeated the Centurions (1-2) in the third-place game of the Fillmore tournament.

Oak Park 33, Bishop Diego 19--Natalie Davis scored 13 points as the Eagles (1-2) defeated the Cardinals (0-3) in the seventh-place game of the Fillmore tournament.

Thousand Oaks 70, El Toro 33--Jenn Detmer scored 17 points, Nicole Woodruff had 15 and Courtney Miller had 12 as the Lancers (1-0) opened the season with a victory over El Toro (0-2) in the first round of the University tournament in Irvine.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Victor Valley 73, Antelope Valley 58-- Trevor Beal scored 19 points to lead the Jackrabbits (4-0) past the Antelopes (3-1) in the championship game of the Saugus tournament. Beal was named the tournament MVP.

Le’Tre Kelley led Antelope Valley with 18 points and Ziaire Williams added 15. Both were all-tournament selections.

Canoga Park 84, Highland 77--Anthony Ellison led the Hunters (2-1) over the Bulldogs (1-3) in the third-place game in the Saugus tournament. Canoga Park’s Aaron Lasley made the all-tournament team.

Highland’s John Burrell set two tournament records--for points in a game with 44 Thursday against Saugus, and for scoring average with 34.6 points.

Sylmar 55, San Fernando 43--Antonio Linares scored 12 points and Sasha McHenry added 10 as the Spartans took 11th place in the Saugus tournament.

Bryson Atkins had 10 points for the Tigers.

Verdugo Hills 63, Newport Harbor 52--Maurice Potter scored 34 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Dons (1-3) defeated the Sailors (0-4) in the seventh-place game of the Newport Harbor tournament.

Channel Islands 63, South Pasadena 46--Andres Garcia scored 17 points, O.J. Thomas had 12 and Charles Merrick added 11 for the Raiders (3-0) at the Nordhoff tournament final. Thomas was named the tournament MVP.

Nordhoff 103, Malibu 77--Herb Thornton scored 19 points and Matt Cresto had 17, including five three-pointers, for the Rangers (2-2) in the consolation final of the Nordhoff tournament. Jamal Arousse had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Nordhoff.

San Marcos 59, Crespi 41--Ron Quarterman scored 17 points for Crespi (1-2) in the consolation final of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

Calabasas 77, Whitney 57--Ryan Coleman had 31 points and six assists and was named MVP as the Coyotes (4-0) defeated Whitney (3-1) in the Calvary Chapel tournament final in Downey.

Masada 86, Buckley 70--Henry Edwards had 28 points to lead Masada to the Buckley tournament championship.

Micah Pechersky had 16 points for Buckley (1-2).

Oakwood 69, Stoneridge 35--Mitchell Goodman scored 37 points, grabbed 23 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead the Gorillas (1-1) to a pool-play victory in the Buckley tournament.

Rolling Hills Prep 58, Providence 55--Marcus Colen had 33 points as Rolling Hills defeated Providence to win the Providence tournament.

Brian Fay had 23 points for Providence.

L.A. Lutheran 62, Viewpoint 57-- L.A. Lutheran defeated Viewpoint to win the consolation final in the Providence tournament.

St. Bonaventure 57, Ribet 27--Sam Benner had 14 points to lead the Seraphs in the third-place game at the Providence tournament.

Hank Laubacker added 12 points for St. Bonaventure. Richard Uene, Ryan Miklusak and Bobby Minkoff each had six points for Ribet.

WRESTLING

Newbury Park tournament--Ventura High had three first-place and three second-place finishers in 14 weight classes to score 219 points for the victory over 18 teams.

Dave Johnson of Ventura was named most-valuable lower-weight wrestler after winning the 135-pound class, and Ati Conner of second-place Dos Pueblos (189.5 points) earned most-valuable upper-weight wrestler honors after winning the 160-pound class.

Harvard-Westlake tournament--The host Wolverines defeated Granada Hills, 52-24, in the final match to post a 5-0 record.

Sophomore Mike Colwin had four pins and one technical pin to go 5-0 and win the 135-pound weight class in the round-robin tournament.

Melkon Melkonian went 5-0 for Granada Hills (4-1) to win the new 215-pound class.
