CROSS-COUNTRY : Stamps Ties Record Again in Regional
FRESNO — Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa High tied her course record for the second time in two weeks and the Southern Section girls had their second-best showing in the Foot Locker West Regional cross-country championships at Woodward Park on Saturday.
Stamps, the defending national champion, was timed in 16 minutes 45 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to equal the mark she set in last year’s West regional and tied in the Division I race of last week’s state championships.
Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks placed second in 17:12 and was followed by Annie Ebiner (17:26) of Glendora St. Lucy’s and sophomores Elaine Canchola (17:39) of Ojai Nordhoff and Kimi Welsh (17:55) of Yucaipa.
Katie Nuanes of Santa Margarita placed seventh in 18:00 to round out the Southern Section’s top five.
Isaac Hawkins of Ferris High in Spokane, Wash., won the boys’ race in 15:16. The top Southern Californian was Nordhoff’s Will Bernaldo, who clocked 15:24 in seventh.
The top eight finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races qualified for next Saturday’s national championships at San Diego’s Morley Field.
