Loyola Gets Lift From Injured Players, 70-67
For a team reported to be hampered by injuries, Loyola Marymount fared well enough Saturday night against Nevada Las Vegas, posting a 70-67 victory before 2,618 at Gersten Pavilion.
Granted, the Lions squandered a 15-point second-half lead and had to survive a failed three-point attempt by UNLV’s Jermaine Smith at the buzzer. But it was probably their biggest nonconference victory under Coach John Olive, who is in his fourth season.
Forward Kenny Hotopp, listed as questionable because of a severe ankle sprain, made an appearance four minutes into the game.
Guard Mike O’Quinn, listed as doubtful because of a broken right hand suffered before the season, followed Hotopp onto the floor, his hand heavily bandaged.
Their presence seemed to inspire the Lions (3-1). Trailing, 13-9, they went on runs of 8-0 and 10-0 en route to a 34-25 first-half lead.
O’Quinn scored six of his 12 points and Hotopp four of his eight before the break. Moreover, their presence opened things up for center Ime Oduok (14 points, 15 rebounds).
However, forward Clayton Johnson scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and the Runnin’ Rebels (1-1), despite 43% shooting, found themselves with a chance to win.
After O’Quinn, bandaged hand and all, made one of two free throws to make it 70-67 with 3.8 seconds left, Smith missed his three-point shot from the top of the key and the Lions had defeated the Rebels for the first time in 13 meetings dating to the 1972-73 season.
