* Anyone driving up Street of the Golden Lantern past Dana Hills High School will see a sight that has not been seen since the school was built in 1972--years before the birth of the students who now attend. The much-needed renovation of the athletic field at the school is finally underway.

Over the last few years, as a result of the poor condition of this field, students have sustained sprained ankles, broken bones, and myriad other injuries. This field certainly has not been a very pretty sight on one of the city’s main thoroughfares. Soon it will be both functional and beautiful. Yet, two of the council majority who voted for this necessary improvement to our community are being punished for it [by a proposed recall election].

For many years now, like it or not, the population of Dana Point has been growing to the point where the once little town now has over 31,000 residents. With this growth has come many children, all needing to be provided with healthful activities. Anyone with children involved in athletics is aware that we have not had sufficient fields for their activities. Now, thanks to the city, we have another multipurpose field.

Legitimate recall action is a necessary weapon designed to eliminate those guilty of malfeasance or illegal action. This situation is neither. It is, rather, a distracting and costly misuse of the process, directed by a minority which did not get its way.
