Five people were killed and nine were wounded during an 11-hour police siege of a rebel hide-out in an upscale Lima neighborhood. The standoff ended with the surrender of a pro-Cuban guerrilla leader and 14 other rebels. Miguel Rincon, the second-ranking commander of the Revolutionary Tupac Amaru Movement, was the last rebel to emerge from a house in the La Molina district. “My capture is a blow to the MRTA, but the MRTA does not depend on one or two persons. The MRTA lives in the hearts of the people,� he shouted, using the group’s Spanish acronym, before being taken away.
