World IN BRIEF : PERU : 5 Killed in Siege of Rebel Hide-Out
Five people were killed and nine were wounded during an 11-hour police siege of a rebel hide-out in an upscale Lima neighborhood. The standoff ended with the surrender of a pro-Cuban guerrilla leader and 14 other rebels. Miguel Rincon, the second-ranking commander of the Revolutionary Tupac Amaru Movement, was the last rebel to emerge from a house in the La Molina district. “My capture is a blow to the MRTA, but the MRTA does not depend on one or two persons. The MRTA lives in the hearts of the people,†he shouted, using the group’s Spanish acronym, before being taken away.
