Airport Foe Enters Race for Vasquez’s Seat
Mission Viejo Councilwoman Susan Withrow has joined a growing field of candidates seeking the District 3 seat on the county Board of Supervisors.
Withrow, an outspoken opponent of a plan to convert El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into a commercial airport, is scheduled to announce her candidacy Friday at the old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana.
Among cities included in District 3 are Yorba Linda, Placentia, Orange, Tustin, Lake Forest and Mission Viejo.
The seat was held for several years by Gaddi H. Vasquez, who resigned in October.
Former Tustin Mayor Don Saltarelli was appointed to succeed Vasquez but does not plan to seek election next year.
Assemblyman Mickey Conroy (R-Orange) and Lake Forest Councilwoman Helen Wilson are among the other possible candidates.
Several people are also lining up to succeed District 1 Supervisor Roger R. Stanton when he steps down next year.
Among them are Westminster Mayor Charles V. Smith and Garden Grove Councilman Mark Leyes.
District 1 includes parts of Santa Ana, Fountain Valley, Westminster and Garden Grove.
