49ers’ May Named Freshman of Year

Long Beach State setter Misty May, regarded as one of the top all-time female volleyball players in Orange County, has been selected the Big West Conference freshman of the year, the conference announced Monday.
May, a standout at Newport Harbor High, leads the 49ers with 958 assists. She averages 2.82 digs and 1.63 kills per game.
Teammate Brita Schwerm joined May on the first team. Schwerm, a senior outside hitter, was a first-team selection last season.
Popi Edwards, a senior middle blocker at UC Irvine, made the first team for the third consecutive season. Edwards is the Anteaters’ all-time leader with 1,590 kills.
Heather Bassett was Cal State Fullerton’s lone all-conference pick. Bassett, a junior outside hitter, made the second team.

Chris Duncan has resigned as the water polo and swimming coach at Laguna Hills. He had coached both sports the last two years and won the Division II boys’ swimming title last year.
