ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : SCORECARD: COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FIRST ROUND OF THE SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS
STREMICK STRIKES FROM BOTH SIDES
Sam Stremick completed only six passes for 60 yards against El Dorado Friday night, but the Villa Park quarterback made his presence known on defense.

Playoff game--Contrary to Saturday’s editions of The Times, Sierra Vista defeated Bellflower, 27-6, in a Division VIII first-round game.
Stremick, who also played safety, recovered a Golden Hawk fumble in the fourth quarter and intercepted a desperation pass by Mike Marzicola on El Dorado’s last play of the game. The Spartans won, 23-20.
HAPPY HOMECOMING FOR FORMER TILLER
Chris Collins returned to his former high school Friday night as the enemy.
Collins, the starting quarterback for Santa Margarita, attended Tustin High his freshman year and even started two games at quarterback for the Tillers’ varsity team in 1992 after he turned 15 in October.
Collins completed seven of eight passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns in Santa Margarita’s 42-22 first-round playoff victory over Tustin.
Collins is 2-0 against the Tillers. The Eagles also beat Tustin, 21-16, in Collins’ sophomore year when both teams were in the Sea View League.
BUT IT WASN’T ENOUGH . . .
Esperanza’s junior quarterback David Parrish completed 24 of 37 passes for 323 yards, all school records, but the third-seeded Aztecs lost to Redlands, 38-31.
Last year’s starting quarterback, Chris Stretch, held the previous record of 272 yards and Jeff Kidwiler held the previous mark for completions (17) and attempts (31).
TOUGH TROJANS SET SCHOOL RECORD
University’s football team won its opening-round playoff game and made history in the process. By defeating Duarte, 35-12, University improved its record to 9-1-1 and established a record for most victories by a Trojan team in one season.
The 1974 team was 8-2. It was also the second time in school history the football team has won a first-round game. The last time was in 1991, when the Trojans reached the semifinals.
ON THE RECORD
‘And I don’t plan on losing any more.’
--Bruce Rollinson, Mater Dei coach, after the Monarchs’ 28-26 victory over Bellflower St. John Bosco. The last time Mater Dei lost a first-round playoff game was in Rollinson’s first season, back in 1989.
HEADS UP PLAY
Two-way standout Vince Branstetter didn’t get his name into the box score Friday night, but he was a main cog in the defensive wheel that helped Western (11-0) remain unbeaten.
Branstetter blocked a punt in the second quarter that eventually led to a Pioneer touchdown.
Early in the fourth quarter, he rushed punter Scott Walker, forcing Walker to kick the ball off the side of his foot for only 14 yards, giving the Pioneers good field position. Western didn’t capitalize, but it helped keep Canyon deep in its own territory.
LOTS OF GRIFFINS
Los Alamitos has former receivers on both sidelines for today’s USC-UCLA game. Tyler Cashman is a fifth-year senior at USC, and Brad Melsby is a freshman at UCLA. Both wear No. 83.
ON THE RECORD
‘We made some mistakes. We gave up those two pass plays. We just didn’t get it done.’
--Marty Martin, Capistrano Valley Christian coach, complaining that, despite holding Anza Hamilton to only two completed passes, both were completed for touchdowns in the Eagles’ 40-6 loss.
