Sonora’s Owens Commits to Titans for Baseball
Ryan Owens, the shortstop on Sonora’s Southern Section Division II baseball championship team, said Monday he has committed to Cal State Fullerton, and will sign Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.
Owens, who hit .400 as a junior for a team that was 24-4-2, recently was rated as one of the nation’s top 100 high school prospects by Baseball America.

In other oral commitments, Brea Olinda’s Gretchen Thompson plans to attend Arkansas next year to play softball, Coach Sharen Caperton said. Thompson is the third local player to commit to the Razorbacks program, joining El Toro outfielder Dana Gulick and Villa Park pitcher Tammy Kincaid. . . . Rosary pitcher Julie Luna plans to attend DePaul next year to play softball, Coach Tom Tice said . . . Pitcher Brooke Hofstetter, who transferred from Brethren Christian to Mater Dei, said she will attend Oregon State to play softball.

Costa Mesa softball Coach Rick Buonarigo, pursuing a degree at Southern California College, will not coach the upcoming season. Buonarigo will be replaced by former Coach Jim Weeks.
