Israeli leaders Targeted in Past
Yitzhak Rabin was not the first Israeli prime minister targeted by a Jewish assassin. In 1949, a year after the establishment of Israel, a 23-year-old Jewish man entered Parliament--then housed in a Tel Aviv cinema--and pointed a submachinegun at then-prime minister David Ben-Gurion and his cabinet. Ushers overpowered and captured him. In 1957, Israeli right-winger Moshe Dweik threw a hand grenade at the cabinet benches in the Parliament building in Jerusalem. Prime minister Ben-Gurion, his foreign minister Golda Meir and transport minister Moshe Carmel were slightly injured, but interior minister Moshe Shapira sustained serious wounds.
