Santa Paula 15, Fillmore 13--Backup running back Freddy Sanchez rushed for 117 yards in 12 carries and one touchdown to lead the Cardinals (3-6) at home in the 80th meeting between the schools.
The key play came with six minutes to play when Sanchez dashed 65 yards to give Santa Paula a 15-7 lead.
Tony Mendez accounted for the other Santa Paula score on a three-yard run early in the second half. The Cardinals took their first lead, 8-7, when Mendez ran in the two-point conversion.
Martin Morales led Fillmore (4-5) by completing five of nine passes for 118 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown play to Ronnie Reyes that cut the Cardinals’ lead 15-13 with five minutes to play.
