Valleywide : 3 From Valley Picked for City Commissions

Mayor Richard Riordan has nominated to city commissions three Valley residents who are subject to confirmation by the City Council.

Sharon Schuster was nominated for the Civil Service Commission, which oversees the city Personnel Department. The department is responsible for the recruitment, promotion and removal of municipal employees.

The Woodland Hills resident has more than three decades of involvement in civic affairs, including four years as president of the American Assn. of University Women, a national organization of 135,000 college graduates dedicated to promoting equity and education for women and girls.

Riordan has nominated Jorge Jackson for the Cultural Heritage Commission, whose mission is to preserve and protect cultural and historic monuments such as the Watts Towers and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House.

The Sherman Oaks resident, who is the regional vice president of public affairs for GTE Telephone Operations, has served on the city Human Relations Commission and the Los Angeles County Consumer Affairs Commission.

Jayne Shapiro of Granada Hills has been nominated for the Commission on the Status of Women, which advises the mayor and City Council on issues important to women, promotes the welfare of women and strives to assure women equal participation in city government.

Shapiro is a member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s executive national board and is a board director for Heschel Day School.
