A World of Hurt
Pain caused by spending cuts can be wrenching, as reflected in the faces of the staff and patients at L.A. County clinics such as Hudson Comprehensive Health Center near Downtown.
At one point, before a federal bailout gave the health system new life, Hudson was one of the centers targeted for closure by the Board of Supervisors.
Patient appointments were canceled and many of the staff were given pink slips. Then came the reprieve. The health center is still open, and many kept their jobs, but patients and staff say the scars will take time to heal.
