ANAHEIM : City Hires Strategist to Assess Golf Courses

A proposal to hire a consulting firm to develop marketing strategies for Anaheim’s two municipal golf courses divided the City Council this week but passed on a 3-2 vote.

Mayor Tom Daly, who voted with Councilmen Tom Tait and Bob Zemel to retain Arizona-based marketing consultant Communication Links for $32,000, argued that the two golf courses have not reached their maximum capacity.

“We’re not there yet,” said Daly, adding that the marketing study “will pay for itself in a short time” by increasing usage at the two facilities--Anaheim Hills Golf Course on Nohl Ranch Road and H.G. “Dad” Miller Golf Course on North Gilbert Street.

City Manager James D. Ruth agreed with the mayor, saying, “I think we’ll definitely get a good return on this investment.”

Councilman Lou Lopez questioned the expenditure, however. “It just doesn’t make sense,” said Lopez, who sided with Councilman Frank Feldhaus in voting against hiring the firm.

Under the agreement, Communication Links will analyze the local golf market and the competition from other courses, then develop strategies for increasing usage and revenue at the two city-owned courses.

The study is to be completed by year’s end.
