WINNING WAYS: For the second time in three years, Foothill Transit, a West Covina-based regional bus system that serves 20 cities in the San Gabriel Valley, has won the public transportation system outstanding achievement award from the American Public Transit Assn. for systems with 151 to 600 vehicles. The bus system earned the same award in 1993.
“It doesn’t mean we’re perfect, but our goal is to keep improving,” said Foothill Transit President Tom Sykes, who is also Mayor Pro Tem for the city of Walnut.
Each year, the national nonprofit trade association judges public transportation systems based on criteria such as productivity, safety and efficiency.
One of the factors that helped Foothill Transit stand out in a category of more than 100 other transportation providers is its public-private partnership, said a spokesman for the transit association.
Foothill Transit contracts with private companies to provide all workers, including bus drivers and service technicians. This approach has allowed the system to continue expanding service while charging the same 85-cent fare since 1987, Sykes said.
