FAIR LEADER: After a 14-month search, the Los Angeles County Fair Assn. at Fairplex in Pomona has named a new chief executive officer.
James E. Henwood, 49, general manager of South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, will fill the post left vacant by the July, 1994, death of Ralph Hinds, who served as Fairplex’s CEO for 17 years.
Henwood, who has worked as general manager of the large Orange County retail complex for 18 years, said he hopes to help Fairplex--a nonprofit entertainment complex that runs the Los Angeles County Fair--grow into a year-round destination spot.
At a news conference Wednesday, Henwood said he wants to take the strengths that the company has and make “Fairplex a primary entertainment destination in Southern California.” He said the company must grow to stay competitive but also needs to maintain its commitment to the county fair, which draws over 1.3 million people a year.
Four Fairplex vice presidents have run the company since Hinds’ death, board Chairman James Kostoff said.
