The country’s second-largest ambulance company plans to purchase a substantial stake in Ventura County’s largest provider of ambulance services, officials said Thursday.
Laidlaw Inc., with assets totaling more than $4 billion, recently announced intentions to acquire all of CareLine Inc.’s public shares, which are held by an estimated 1,500 individuals.
The action will make CareLine a wholly owned subsidiary of Laidlaw.
CareLine now operates ambulances in Ventura, Fillmore, Santa Paula, Camarillo, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks.
Barbara Brodfuehrer, administrator of the county’s Emergency Medical Services Agency, said she believes ambulance service will not change as a result of the the acquisition.
“It should mean nothing,” Brodfuehrer said. “We anticipate that care will remain at least at the level that it is at now.”
