PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : NFC : Super Bowl 2000 Is Tampa Incentive
The push for a new home for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gained momentum when NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said he will recommend the Super Bowl be played there in January 2000, if plans to build a state-of-the-art stadium are approved.
The announcement came as the team launched an ambitious seat-deposit program that could raise up to $30 million of the $168 million owner Malcolm Glazer says it will take to build the type of facility needed to keep the Buccaneers in Tampa.
In other news, Buccaneer wide receiver Alvin Harper was hit with a $2-million default judgment by a state district judge in Dallas for failing to show up for a trial last month involving a Dallas man and woman--James Ivans and Pamela Kelley--who filed a civil suit accusing Harper of assaulting them during a May 22, 1994 fracas at a nightclub.
Judge John Marshall apparently agreed that each defendant deserved $1 million in damages.
